The Million Dollar Quartet: (L-R) Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash

Several rare, prized items from Elvis Presley’s personal collection will be up for auction at The Graceland Archives Studio in Memphis on August 13th.

Ready for the gavel are a starburst jumpsuit (above) worn during a month-long stay at the Las Vegas Hilton in January 1973, a jacket worn during a dance scene with Ann-Margaret in the 1964 film ‘Viva Las Vegas’ and music publishing documents.

But for my money (well someone else’s, sadly) the biggest prize will be an acoustic guitar signed by the members of ‘The Million Dollar Quartet’ – future big stars all, who recorded for Sam Phillips’ Sun Records label at the time: Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Presley. (another was Roy Orbison)

[Note] The impromptu recording session was held on December 4, 1956 at the Sun Studios in Memphis, and if you’re interested in the historic event, I encourage you to read more on it.

Also, after runs both on and off Broadway – and nationwide, Million Dollar Quartet, the musical based on that legendary session in 1956, is now playing at Harrah’s in Vegas through December 31st. Info & Trailer
