Rick Springfield at Freedom Hill (09/18/2015)

email-826322_1280The Motor City was rockin’ on Friday night (9/18) – 80’s style.

The show, at Freedom Hill, in the Detroit suburb of Sterling Heights, was headlined by Rick Springfield, who’s dual careers in music and acting both seem to be chugging along.

TheRomantics:01Local early 80’s stars The Romantics (Talking In Your Sleep, What I Like About You) opened the night with a 40-minute set.

They were followed by Vancouver, Canada 80’s rockers, Loverboy, cranking out their U.S. Top 10 hits Lovin’ Every Minute Of It and This Could Be The Night, along with arena-rock favorites Turn Me Loose (#35), Working For The Weekend (#29), Hot Girls In Love (#11) and Heaven In Your Eyes (#12).

Loverboy:01Evidently, Loverboy lead singer Mike Reno’s vocal performance was strong – his career having been hampered in the past by issues causing voice weakness.

Springfield, 66, capped off the night with the expected repertoire of fan favorites ; Top 10-ers I’ve Done Everything For You, Don’t Talk To Strangers, Affair Of The Heart and Love Somebody.  The 1981 million-selling #1, Jessie’s Girl, was the encore song.

Musically, Springfield’s just released a new album called Stripped Down, and his acting career is booming.

He currently stars with three-time award-winning actor Meryl Streep in the rock music biz movie Ricki and The Flash.

And this summer he popped up on Season 2 of the hot HBO series, True Detective, where he played a freaky-looking shrink, Dr. Irving Pitlor. Springfield was hardly recognizable. The producers had him shave his beard and cut his hair, Rick says, and then “spray-painted it bowling-ball black, to look like a terrible dye job.” Plus, they yanked his face back with tape and elastic bands to simulate a face lift, and topped it off with “this horrible orange bad-tan makeup.”

Ugh! Stick to being a rock star, Rick!
