OnThisDay:Calendar:04B:MASTER December 8, 1980

John Lennon was a dreamer, for sure – “but I’m not the only one” as he correctly states in the John Lennon Plastic Ono Band classic song Imagine.

His dreams died 35 years ago in the foyer outside his New York City landmark apartment building, The Dakota, by fan-turned-killer Mark David Chapman.

And, although the message from that 1971 hit continues to this day for most of us, our hopeful vision for an official (or unofficial) musical reunion of The Beatles ended abruptly that day with his death.

John Winston Lennon would have turned 75 this past October. Read my post of October 9, 2015 on how it was observed.

This past weekend, Larry McShane of the New York Daily News wrote a great article that not only recounts the events that lead to that fateful moment on December 8, 1980, but it also presents a perspective from one of the first emergency responders on the scene after the shooting – NYPD officer Tony Palma – who once shared coffee with Lennon and wife Yoko Ono at a shop near The Dakota.
