Another song from the “oh wow” category today over the sound system here on the patio of Starbucks on Little Road in New Port Richey, FL., which is my unofficial “office” from where almost all HOTH posts originate.
You may or may not have heard the hit version – or even the original – of the song Here Comes My Baby, but it became a significant hit for the UK group The Tremeloes in the spring of 1967.
That version and the original (the one heard over the PA today) by fellow Brit Cat Stevens are both featured.

[1966]
London pop-folk singer/songwriter/guitarist Cat Stevens (born Steven Georgiou) began his singing career in 1966 playing folk music while attending college in Hammersmith.
In late ’66 he released his first album on the Deram label called Matthew & Son, which produced two poorly-charting singles on Billoard.
After a lengthy time off to recuperate from tuberculosis, Stevens made a hugely successful return to the charts in the early 70’s with several big albums and charted singles that decade, including Wild World, Moon Shadow, Peace Train, Morning Has Broken, Oh Very Young and Another Saturday Night (the latter four all hitting the U.S. Top 10), plus the classic LP track The First Cut Is The Deepest.
Stevens converted to the Muslim religion in 1979; taking the name Yusuf Islam.
One of the non-single tracks from that 1966 debut album was a song he wrote called Here Comes By Baby.

The Tremeloes

Britain’s pop-rock band The Tremeloes began as the back-up group for UK vocalist Brian Poole in 1961, but by 1966 the singer and the band had parted ways.
The new Tremeloes added vocalist Len “Chip” Hawkes in 1967 to record a cover of Here Comes My Baby – perhaps the best known version because of its hit single status.
In America, it reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on June 3rd, 1967 and hit #4 hit on the UK Singles Chart.
A another cover version by The Mavericks peaked at #42 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in 1999.
[Note] On New Year’s Day, 1962, before they reached international stardom, The Beatles auditioned for Decca Records‘ A&R man Mike Smith at Decca Studios in north London.
In what’s widely regarded as one of the biggest mistakes in record industry history, Smith and Decca decided to reject the band, selecting instead to sign Brian Poole and The Tremeloes.
