Following on the heels of an essay I wrote and published late last month on my website music blog called “Dylan, The Byrds and the Birth of Mid-1960s Folk Rock” comes a new book about an event which not only introduced my piece, but also was the premise upon which it was written.
On July 25, 1965, Bob Dylan integrated an electric Fender Stratocaster guitar into some of his music at the annual Newport (R.I.) Folk Festival – and as the book’s subtitle accurately asserts, it was an event that “split the sixties” musically speaking.
Written by music historian Elijah Wald, Dylan Goes Electric!: Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night that Split the Sixties goes into much greater detail about that event of huge musical significance – whereas my post used the occurrence as a pivotal moment for the main focus of my article, the birth of the Folk Rock Movement.

Here’s a very good interview with author Wald conducted by NPR – also late last month – on the new book, and about that day at Newport 50 years ago.
