As notated at the excellent music website, This Day In Music, it was 38 years ago today that one of the greatest stars of the genre of music known as Glam Rock – Marc Bolan – was killed in a car crash in his native UK.
T. Rex (L-R): Bill Legend, Mickey Finn, Marc Bolan, Steve Currie
The former lead singer of the band he formed in 1967, T. Rex (Tyrannosaurus Rex), Bolan, born Mark Field, was a passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend, singer Gloria Jones, who, in 1965, recorded the original version of the 1981 hit by the group Soft Cell called Tainted Love.
Jones survived the single car wreck, but Bolan died instantly.
On September 16, 2007 – the 30th anniversary of his death – the London Telegraph published a great article on Bolan and his career, written by Adam Sweeting.
The Telegraph has reprinted that piece in today’s edition.
