Over the weekend, you may have heard that Sir Elton John, speaking to the BBC, stated he’d like to sit down for a meeting with President Vladmir Putin to discuss Russian gay rights and inequality.
And yesterday (9-15) you may also have heard that the 1994-inducted Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame member had subsequently received an unexpected phone call from the Russian boss extending an invitation to John for a one-on-one to discuss those issues.
In fact, following the call on Monday, John wrote on his Instagram account –
“Thank you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today. I look forward to meeting with you face to face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia.”

Well, it seems to have all been a hoax.
According to a new report, the prank call was initiated by two Russian comedians.
During a telephone interview from Russia with ABC News, comedians Vladimir Krasnov and Alexei Stolyarov, known by their show names “Vovan and Lexus” admitted they were the originators of the call – done for the purposes of seeing what John would say if, in fact, such a conversation was truly taking place; and to then broadcast the dialog over Russian media.
Those revelations seem to jive with a statement issued by Putin’s press secretary following John’s social media post, saying no such called had occurred, and rebuking Sir Elton for bothering them with such an irrelevant issue.
