45 ADAPTOR - 01 Yellow:Black With the holiday season having long-arrived here in the U.S. (Christmas trees at Sam’s Club in September) it will no doubt become increasingly difficult to detect regular music amongst the bombardment of seasonal fare which has already begun over the sound system here on the patio of Starbucks in New Port Richey, FL – though my ears did manage to pick out one today.

I caught this semi-“oh wow” tune by The Newbeats called Bread And Butter (an advert for a menu item inside, perhaps?)

Formed in Shreveport, Louisiana, the pop trio’s trademark sound featured the vocals of group leader Larry Henley, who’s high falsetto took ‘Bread And Butter’ to #2 on the Hot 100 of Billboard magazine’s weekly chart listings in the summer of 1964.

Other Top 30 hits which followed included Everthing’s Alright (1964  # 16) and Run, Baby Run (Back Into My Arms) (1965  #12).

The Newbeats recorded for the Nashville, TN-based Hickory Records label – and the huge Acuff-Rose music publishing company – where Henley remained as part of the ‘Music City’ scene after the group disbanded.

He eventually became a respected songwriter, authoring #1 Country Music hits for Tammy Wynette (Til I Get It Right), Randy Travis (Is It Still Over?), Tanya Tucker (Lizzie And The Rainman) and Janie Fricke (He’s A Heartache).

But Henley’s biggest success as a writer came in 1989 when he and Jeff Silbar co-penned the huge Bette Midler hit Wind Beneath My Wings.
