Being an NFL team franchise owner has it’s extra-curricular rewards – like owning Beatle Ringo Starr‘s original 3-piece Ludwig drum kit!
Bob Irsay, who’s already acquired guitars once used by George Harrison and John Lennon, shelled out $2.2 million at auction to secure his latest prized Fab Four artifact. (#Post of September 14, 2015)
In 2013, the Indianapolis Colts’ owner purchased a 1966 Vox guitar, played by Lennon and Harrison, for $408,000 at auction. Then in 2004, Irsay paid $567,000 at auction for a Gibson SG originally owned by Harrison.
Lennon had given the Vox guitar to electronics engineer Alexis “Magic Alex” Mardas as a gift, while Harrison gave the SG to Badfinger‘s Pete Ham.

About 200 guitars make up the Irsay collection, which includes Jerry Garcia‘s Tiger (purchased at auction for $957,000) and the Fender Stratocaster played by Bob Dylan during his controversial electric debut at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival (#Post of July 27, 2015). That was also purchased at auction for $965,000.
After placing the winning bid, Irsay, who also owns one of Paul McCartney‘s guitars, texted: “Finally, after 45 years, The Beatles are together again.”
It’s hard to argue with that.
