Happy Holidays – and enjoy!
About ‘RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER’ : The song was written by Johnny Marks and based on a story penned by his brother-in-law Robert L. May which first appeared in a booklet published by the Montgomery Ward department store chain in 1939.
The story is now owned by The Rudolph Company, LP and has been adapted in various forms including a the classic song, a television special with sequels, and a feature film with a sequel.
The song was first sung commercially by crooner Harry Brannon on New York City radio in November 1949 before Gene Autry‘s recording hit #1 in the U.S. the week of Christmas 1949.
•
Trivia Stuff: Gene Autry’s version holds the distinction of being the only chart-topping hit to completely fall off the Billboard Pop Music Chart after reaching #1.
Also, because his recording officially reached #1 on that chart for the week ending January 7, 1950, it became the first number one hit single of that decade.
