#JustHeardAtStarbucks®

45 ADAPTOR - 01 Yellow:Black We were “all souled out” this afternoon on the beautiful covered outdoor patio (my office) at Starbucks® on Little Road in New Port Richey, FL.

The post-holiday playlist on the store’s audio system has been pumping out a host of amazing tunes, so here’s a #JHAS “Twin Spin” – something like an audio ‘double-shot’ of espresso!

It’s one-hit-wonder Timmy Thomas and also the “Memphis Group” Booker T. & The M.G.’s.

WHY CAN’T WE LIVE TOGETHER
Timmy Thomas
(Single Version)
[1972]

Timmy Thomas had learned keyboards by the age of 10, played organ in his dad’s church and in high school won a scholarship to the prestigious Stan Kenton Jazz Clinic in Jackson, Tennessee.

While in college, he managed to score a gig in Memphis as a session player for the famed Stax record company, playing on many records on both the Stax & Volt labels – even filling in on organ for the house band’s heavyweight keyboardist Booker T. if he was absent (see below).

Thomas eventually moved to Miami, where he signed a contract with the well-known local label TK Records and got a chance to record his only hit, the soulful Why Can’t We Live Together on their subsidiary Glades label.

Why Can’t We Love Together climbed to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February of 1973.

Despite not attaining a successful follow-up hit, Timmy Thomas remained with TK, playing on sessions for KC And The Sunshine Band and other label artists.

TIME IS TIGHT
Booker T. & The M.G.’s
(Single Version)
[1969]

The famed house band for Stax Records in Memphis was Booker T. & The M.G’s (Memphis Group), comprised of Booker T. Jones on keyboards (usually his signature Hammond B-3 model organ), guitarist Steve Cropper, Donald “Duck” Dunn on bass and drummer Al Jackson, Jr..

Besides session work, the quartet also released their own material and are best known for the million-selling 1962 instrumental hit Green Onions (#3).

This tune, originally recorded in the mid-60’s, was re-named Time Is Tight and re-recorded in 1969 for its appearance in the movie Uptight.

Time Is Tight followed their #9 instrumental hit one year earlier, Hang ‘Em High, and by reaching #6 on Billboard, gave the group a career Top 10 trifecta.
