Welcome to another #1 Songs On This Date! – another four-pack of the cream of the cream from the Top 40 Rock ‘n’ Roll music era.

43 distinct number one singles between the years 1956 and 1995 have already been presented since January – with literally hundreds more to come.

They’re all part of a permanent archive that’s being built at HouseoftheHits.com which will ultimately feature ALL 837 different number one singles as listed in 2,080 weekly national music charts published by Billboard® within that 40-year timeframe.

Fortunately, HouseoftheHits has every one of those charts – plus secondary data – as published in the essential Joel Whitburn’s Record Research series (CD-ROM and eBook edition formats).

Everything is stored digitally on a HouseoftheHits computer – as are all 837 number one singles (in high-quality audio) from the music vault.

With the availability of precise data and the HOTH song files – together with some amazing technology – approximately 600 – 700 of those Billboard® chart-toppers will be presented this year – with the remainder to follow in early 2017.

As the archive grows you will have continual free access to the accumulating repository, indexed by Decade, Month and Year. Plus, EVERY Title and Artist will be (blue) hyper-linked for smooth, easy navigation from song to song – with more great features to be added along the way.

Again, it will contain every #1 single in America, plus interesting commentary about each song (written by yours truly) and presented with a crystal clear High-Definition audio version of the complete original hit to instantly play as often as you wish.

The ever-expanding library is found HERE and you can bookmark this link for future instant access.

Enjoy!

THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL
Michael Jackson
[1987]
(Single Version)

Number One: 1 week
Replaced: GOT MY MIND SET ON YOU / George Harrison
Succeeded by: NEED YOUR LOVE TONIGHT / INXS

Thanks to my trusty research tool, Fred Bronson‘s The Billboard Book Of Number One Hits (5th Edition) I’ve discovered this particular Jackson single is a cornucopia of impressive Billboard chart stats. Here are some –

• The third single from his album Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel marked MJ’s first time having 3 consecutive singles from a solo album.

TWYMMF was Jackson’s seventh #1 single of the 80’s – the most from that decade.

• Combined with his chart-topping singles with the Jackson 5, it was his 13th number one.

• Again, counting the records with his brothers – beginning January 30th, 1970 (I Want You Back) to this date with The Way You Make Me Feel – he lengthened his span of #1 singles to 17 years, 51 weeks.

And it goes on, but let’s listen – thanks again, Fred!

BABY COME BACK
Player
[1977]
(Single Version)

Number One: 3 weeks
Replaced: HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE / The Bee Gees
Succeeded by: STAYIN’ ALIVE / The Bee Gees

After the release of the mega movie and soundtrack album Saturday Night Fever, to overtake the emerging chart juggernaut known as The Bee Gees was an accomplishment of which to be proud for the Los Angeles band named Player.

Baby Come Back supplanted a three-week stint at #1 for the Brothers Gibb – giving the single a trifecta of its own at the top – but only to be overtaken by the next Bee Gees’ single from the SNF album, Stayin’ Alive.

Lead vocalist John Charles Crowley explains how the band’s name came about –

We saw the word on the television when the players from the show we listed. We knocked of the ‘s’ and went with it. I think the word holds a certain ambiguity.”

Speaking of words, IMO, one of the great lyrical lines from any Top 40 record is heard in the first part of the second verse – “All day long, we’re in a mask of false bravado …”

It took me a long time to figure out what they were singing (no ‘Lyrics.com’ in the late 70’s) but one day it just came to me…funny how that works.

[Trivia Bits] Baby Come Back ended a three-week stint at #1 for the Bee Gees – giving the single a trifecta of its own at the top – but only to be overtaken by the next monster single from their SNF album, Stayin’ Alive.

After the success of Baby Come Back, Player would again visit the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with This Time I’m In It For Love (#10).

JUDY IN DISGUISE (With Glasses)
John Fred and His Playboy Band
[1967]

Number One: 2 weeks
Replaced: HELLO GOODBYE / The Beatles
Succeeded by: GREEN TAMBOURINE / Lemon Pipers

As you might suspect, John Fred Gourrier, from Baton Rouge, LA, came up with the title of this song upon first hearing the BeatlesSgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club album track Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.

He mistakenly thought they were singing ‘Lucy In Disguise With Diamonds’, and after his initial disappointment, created the only Top 10 single for John Fred And His Playboy Band.

Judy In Disguise (With Glasses) spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard.

[Trivia Bits] The original ‘working title’ of the tune was ‘Beverly In Disguise (With Glasses),’ but after seeing a Playtex bra commercial on TV (“Cross your heart, with your living bra”) John finalized the song’s theme. (How he arrived at the name ‘Judy‘ is unknown)

Originally a white band playing R&B music known as ‘John Fred and The Playboys,’ the group’s name was altered just prior to recording their debut single for Paula RecordsAgnes English – which failed to crack the Hot 100.

AT THE HOP
Danny and The Juniors
[1957]

Number One: 5 weeks
Replaced: APRIL LOVE / Pat Boone
Succeeded by: DON’T / Elvis Presley

Led by vocalist Danny Rapp, At The Hop by Philadelphia’s Danny and The Juniors was the first #1 record of 1958, a time when Top 40 Rock’n’Roll was still in its infancy – just two and a half years after its unofficial inception.

At The Hop spent a whopping seven weeks at #1.

[Trivia Bit] The demo version of the song was originally named Do The Bop – after a current dance craze. But on the advice of the host of TV’s American Bandstand, legendary DJ Dick Clark, the title was changed. Clark revealed that “The Bop” was a dying fad and suggested they call it At The Hop – after which the tune was re-cut containing its new title.
