The nineties recording career of Atlanta, GA.’s TLC was a prolific one indeed.
Between 1992 and 1999, the female R&B trio – Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas – scored an impressive nine Top 10 singles, four of which were #1 platinum-sellers, with the other five churning out a million copies apiece.
The first of the 4 chart-toppers, and one of the 2-million-sellers, was Creep, starting it’s second of four weeks on top of the heap on this date.
[Trivia Bit] Previously, Lisa Lopes had been sentenced to five years probation in 1994 for burning down the home of her then-boyfriend, NFL player Andre Rison. Then, sadly, a 2002 car crash claimed her life at the age of only 30.

Ironically, the two biggest hit singles from the four-man British-American rock band Foreigner were ballads.
Following the huge hits Feels Like The First Time (1977 • #4), Cold As Ice (1977 • #6), Hot Blooded (1978 • #3) Double Vision (1978 • #2) and Urgent (1981 • #4) the group changed pace with 1981’s Waiting For A Girl Like You (#2) and then I Want To Know What Love Is in late 1984.
[Note] The former sat in the runner-up position for a Billboard chart-record 10 weeks in ’81, held back from reaching the top by the biggest hit of that year, Physical by Olivia Newton-John (#1SongsOnThisDate for #January 18th, 1982).
Lead vocalist Lou Gramm and the boys remained at #1 with I Want To Know What Love Is for two weeks, and by doing so, allayed the initial fears Foreigner had that back-to-back ballads might ruin their rock image.

Neil Sedaka placed six Top 10 singles inside the Billboard Hot 100 between 1959 and 1962, but thought his singing career had ended by 1964 with the onslaught of pop music’s British Invasion, led by the Beatles.
Indeed the following years were lean and saw Sedaka exclusively penning songs with his long-time Brill Building songwriting partner Howard Greenfield – but with little success.

In an attempt to revive his career Neil moved England, where late 50’s-early 60’s American pop stars were still revered.
After meeting new songwriting partner Phil Cody, Sedaka recorded an album of material called Solitaire with the UK group Hotlegs, who later become 10cc (I’m Not In Love, The Things We Do For Love.
Sedaka’s string of good fortune continued when he encountered Elton John at a party in London, which ended with EJ agreeing to sign him to a contract with his new label Rocket Records.
Neil then returned to the U.S. where he recorded his comeback album for Rocket, titled Sedaka’s Back, that included the debut single Laughter In The Rain.

[Trivia Bit] Laughter In The Rain spent just a solitary week at #1, but the biggest hit of his career wasn’t far behind – 1975’s Bad Blood. With Elton John‘s harmony vocals throughout, the single topped the Hot 100 for a trio of weeks and sold a million copies.

Singer/actress Petula Clark had long been a star in both her native UK and elsewhere prior to her international #1 smash hit, 1964’s Downtown.
She’d appeared on the radio at age 9, had her own show Pet’s Parlour by 11, her first TV series in the UK in 1950, an American record release in 1953 and acted in 20 British-made movies.
But her greatest achievements were yet to come and began with this, her first of two career #1 million-sellers while under the direction of songwriter-record producer Tony Hatch.
Hatch also wrote/produced four of her five other Top 10 hits: I Know A Place (1965 • #3), My Love (1965 • #1), I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love (1966 • #9) and Don’t Sleep In The Subway (1967 • #5).
[Note] The fifth Top 10-er was This Is My Song (1967 • #3) penned by the great British comic actor, filmmaker and composer Charlie Chaplin in 1966. Given by Chaplin to Clark to record, producer Hatch hated the song and didn’t participate in its production.

[Trivia Bit] Prior to his success with Petula Clark, Tony Hatch had successfully penned pop songs under two pseudonyms – Mark Anthony and Fred Nightingale – namely, Forget Him by Philadelphia teen idol Bobby Rydell, and the 1964 hit by the British Invasion band the Searchers called Sugar And Spice, respectively.
