Welcome to the month of March! And to #1 Songs On This Date – another four-pack of the very best from the Top 40 Rock’n Roll music era.

98 distinct number one singles between the years 1956 and 1995 have already been presented in the past two months – with literally hundreds more to come.

They’re all part of a permanent archive that’s being built at HouseoftheHits.com which will ultimately feature ALL 837 different number one singles as listed in 2,080 weekly national music charts published by Billboard® within that 40-year timeframe.

Fortunately, HouseoftheHits has every one of those charts – plus secondary data – as published in the essential Joel Whitburn’s Record Research series (CD-ROM and eBook edition formats).

Everything is stored digitally on a HouseoftheHits computer – as are all 837 number one singles (in high-quality audio) from the music vault.

With the availability of precise data and the HOTH song files – together with some amazing technology – approximately 600 – 700 of those Billboard® chart-toppers will be presented this year – with the remainder to follow in early 2017.

As the archive grows you will have continual free access to the accumulating repository, indexed by Decade, Month and Year. Plus, EVERY Title and Artist will be (blue) hyper-linked for smooth, easy navigation from song to song – with more great features to be added along the way.

Again, it will contain every #1 single in America, plus interesting commentary about each song (written by yours truly) and presented with a crystal clear High-Definition audio version of the complete original hit to instantly play as often as you wish.

The ever-expanding library is found HERE and you can bookmark this link for future instant access.

Enjoy!

KYRIE
Mr. Mister
[1985]
(Radio Edit Version)

Number One: 2 weeks
Replaced: HOW WILL I KNOW / Whitney Houston
Succeeded by: SARA / Starship

Kyrie (pronounced Keer-ee-EH) by the Los Angeles quartet Mr. Mister was taken from their second album titled Welcome To The Jungle.

Composed by lyricist John Lang along with Mr. Mister frontman Richard Page and their keyboardist Steve George, Kyrie reached #1 on this exact date in 1986. But it would hold it for just two weeks in a year that would see an even greater number of songs reach the apex of the Hot 100 – thirty!

Previously, their lead single from the same album, Broken Wings, also topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks in 1985 and was composed by the same tandem of Lang-Page-George.

THEME FROM “S.W.A.T”
Rhythm Heritage
[1975]
(Radio Edit Version)

Number One: 1 week
Replaced: 50 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LOVER / Paul Simon
Succeeded by: LOVE MACHINE Pt. 1 / The Miracles

Theme From “S.W.A.T.” was a disco-style arrangement of the official theme song from the ‘Special Weapon And Tactics’ TV series which first aired on ABC in February of 1975.

Written by veteran composer Barry DeVorzon, the instrumental track was put together by producer Steve Barri and arranger Michael Omartian with the assistance of other studio musicians, including drummer Jeff Porcaro (Toto) and Ray Parker, Jr. (Raydio).

Released under the name “Rhythm Heritage”, the single hit the top of Billboard one year after the debut of the TV series.

[Trivia Bits] Some of Barry DeVorzon‘s many other writing credits include Dreamin’ for Johnny Burnette in 1960, 1963’s I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonight by the Cascades and the 1979 Eagles‘ song In the City – co-penned with group guitarist Joe Walsh.

Steve Barri, along with songwriting partner P.F. Sloan, composed and co-produced 1965’s apocalyptical #1 hit by Barry McGuire called Eve Of Destruction.

THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN’
Nancy Sinatra
[1966]
(Album Version)

Number One: 1 week
Replaced: LIGHTNIN’ STRIKES / Lou Christie
Succeeded by: THE BALLAD OF THE GREEN BERETS / SSgt. Barry Sadler

Nancy Sinatra was one of the first artists signed by Reprise Records in 1961, but early success was elusive for the 21-year old with her new label owned by her father, Frank.

Singles such as Cufflinks And A Tie Clip, Tonight You Belong To Me, True Love and So Long Babe all failed- as did the 11 others which followed.

Then, after a failed marriage to singer Tommy Sands (Teen-Age Crush: 1957 • #2) Nancy’s fortunes were about to change when she met musician-songwriter-record producer Lee Hazlewood.

These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ – written and produced by Hazlewood – became a world-wide hit, with Sinatra scoring the first #1 in the UK by a female since Stupid Cupid by Connie Francis in 1958.

[Trivia Bits] The ‘Boots’ recording session included many members of the famed Los Angeles studio group The Wrecking Crew, including Hal Blaine on drums, Al Casey and Tommy Tedesco on guitars, Carol Kaye on electric bass, and Chuck Berghofer on double bass providing the famous bass line.

In the outstanding video documentary on The Wrecking Crew, Sinatra reveals that Hazlweood objected to her recording the song – feeling “it wasn’t a girl’s song.”

Sinatra’s retort was “well, it’s not a guy’s song…too harsh and abusive, but perfect for a girl to sing.”

Nancy ultimately won the dispute, although Lee called the sound on ‘Boots’ “dumb.”

THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN’

(Video)

Too hilarious to not include here, this cheesy, lip-synced video perfectly defines 1960’s kitsch. But admittedly, Nancy looked pretty hot.

LISBON ANTIGUA
Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra
[1956]

Number One: 4 weeks
Replaced: ROCK AND ROLL WALTZ / Kay Starr
Succeeded by: THE POOR PEOPLE OF PARIS / Les Baxter, his Chorus and Orchestra

1956 was a year of musical transition when the Billboard Pop Charts began to reflect the emerging Top 40 Rock ‘n Roll era. But also one in which many old-line artists and their recordings were still competing with that new music for chart position and popularity.

One of those was Nelson Riddle, an American whose distinguished career as a song arranger, composer and bandleader went back to the mid-40’s when he traveled with Tommy Dorsey. He eventually worked with greats like Nat Cole and Frank Sinatra.

Riddle also did film and television show scoring; the latter included the themes from Route 66, The Untouchables and Newhart.

Written in 1937 as a Portuguese song, Lisbon Antigua – translated in English as “Old Lisbon” – spent a hefty 4 weeks on top of Billboard.

[Trivia Bit] Riddle convinced the producers of TV’s Route 66 to abandon the show’s vocal title song recorded by Bobby Troup and instead to use his instrumental arrangement.
