Welcome to another #1 Songs On This Date! – another four-pack of the cream of the cream from the Top 40 Rock ‘n’ Roll music era.

69 distinct number one singles between the years 1956 and 1995 have already been presented since January – with literally hundreds more to come.

They’re all part of a permanent archive that’s being built at HouseoftheHits.com which will ultimately feature ALL 837 different number one singles as listed in 2,080 weekly national music charts published by Billboard® within that 40-year timeframe.

Fortunately, HouseoftheHits has every one of those charts – plus secondary data – as published in the essential Joel Whitburn’s Record Research series (CD-ROM and eBook edition formats).

Everything is stored digitally on a HouseoftheHits computer – as are all 837 number one singles (in high-quality audio) from the music vault.

With the availability of precise data and the HOTH song files – together with some amazing technology – approximately 600 – 700 of those Billboard® chart-toppers will be presented this year – with the remainder to follow in early 2017.

As the archive grows you will have continual free access to the accumulating repository, indexed by Decade, Month and Year. Plus, EVERY Title and Artist will be (blue) hyper-linked for smooth, easy navigation from song to song – with more great features to be added along the way.

Again, it will contain every #1 single in America, plus interesting commentary about each song (written by yours truly) and presented with a crystal clear High-Definition audio version of the complete original hit to instantly play as often as you wish.

The ever-expanding library is found HERE and you can bookmark this link for future instant access.

Enjoy!

OPPOSITES ATTRACT
Paula Abdul (Duet with The Wild Pair)
[1989]

Number One: 3 weeks
Replaced: HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU / Michael Bolton
Succeeded by: ESCAPADE / Janet Jackson

After penning and producing two Top 5 hits by Southern Californian Paula Abdul the previous year – Forever Your Girl (1989 • #1) and (It’s Just) The Way That You Love Me (1989 • #4) – Oliver Leiber hit the trifecta on this date with Opposites Attract.

Leiber came up with the song’s title while stranded with car trouble.

With time on his hands while his vehicle was being repaired, he visited a nearby used book store to peruse the paperback-lined shelves.

After considering a number of potential titles, he stumbled across a book called ‘Opposites Attract.’

With title in tow and once back home, Leiber finished writing the song by returning to a familiar source for its lyrical content – a special ex-girlfriend from his youth in New York City.

He simply employed the same subject source used for both of his other chart successes for Abdul, and wrote another tune based on part of the long-ago relationship.

Then, seeking to give the record some of that ‘old soul feeling,’ he called upon the Wild PairTony Christian and Marv Gunn – for some effective Sam and Dave-type vocals with Abdul.

ROCK WITH YOU
Michael Jackson
[1979]
(Single Version)

Number One: 4 weeks
Replaced: PLEASE DON’T GO / K.C. and The Sunshine Band
Succeeded by: DO THAT TO ME ONE MORE TIME /
The Captain And Tennille

Michael Jackson’s Rock With You was the second of four huge hits from his debut post-Jackson 5/The Jacksons album Off The Wall.

That, along with Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough (#1), the LP’s title track (#10) and She’s Out Of My Life (#10), combined to make Jackson the first solo artist to place four singles from one album inside Billboard’s Top 10. And “The King of Pop” would best that in 1982-83 by placing six there from his album Thriller.

For his first solo work, MJ had hired his co-collaborator on The Wiz, the legendary Quincy Jones, to produce the record.

Jones then sought out Rod Temperton, keyboardist of the UK soul group Heatwave (Boogie Nights, The Groove Line) to write a song for the LP – the title track, as it turned out.

Temperton ultimately also penned Rock With You, as well as Burn The Disco Out.

Rock With You was spending its final week of four on top of the Hot 100 on this date.

THANK YOU Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin
Sly & The Family Stone
[1969]

Number One: 2 weeks
Replaced: VENUS / Shocking Blue
Succeeded by: BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER / Simon & Garfunkel

Sylvester “Sly Stone” Stewart – a one-time San Francisco radio DJ – first became involved in the record industry as co-owner of local label Autumn Records, where he produced hits by artists like Beau Brummels, Mojo Men and Bobby Freeman.

He then formed the psychedelic pop group Sly & The Family Stone, who became a prominent voice for late 60’s-early 70’s counterculture youth in America.

With positive messages attached to their songs, the seven-member racially integrated band were able to replace desperation and pessimism with peace and hope.

But eventually the excesses produced by the band’s fame and success, including appearances at Woodstock and the Newport Jazz Festival, plus multiple Top 10 U.S. hits (4 million-sellers and 3 number ones) began taking their toll on Stewart.

Drug addiction, acute tardiness before performances – and often complete “no-show” – resulted in lawsuits and other financial repercussions that led to his eventual bankruptcy and further downward spiral.

Despite all the turmoil, Sly & The Family Stone managed to produce many infectious and joyous hit singles: Dance To The Music (1968 • #8), Everyday People (1968 • #1), Hot Fun In The Summertime (1969 • #2), Family Affair (1971 • #1) and the double-sided chart-topper on this date, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) b/w Everybody Is A Star.

TEEN ANGEL
Mark Dinning
[1959]

Number One: 2 weeks
Replaced: RUNNING BEAR / Johnny Preston
Succeeded by: THE THEME FROM ‘A SUMMER PLACE’ / Percy Faith and His Orchestra

Teen Angel by Mark Dinning holds the distinction of recording the first hit record of a genre which prevailed on Top 40 radio throughout the 60’s called ‘teen tragedy’ songs: Tell Laura I Love Her (Ray Peterson), Ebony Eyes (The Everly Brothers), Moody River (Pat Boone), Patches (Dickie Lee), Last Kiss (Wayne Cochran, later covered by J. Frank Wilson), Leader Of The Pack (The Shangri-Las), Dead Man’s Curve (Jan & Dean), Ode To Billy Joe (Bobbie Gentry) and many others.

Dinning’s older sister, Jean Surrey, was a songwriter who penned Teen Angel based on a magazine article she’d read which delved into juvenile delinquency and suggested ‘good’ kids be viewed as “teen angels.”

She offered the song to her singer/brother for his consideration, and he recorded a demo version of the tune right in the family’s living room.

A copy of the tape circuitously found its way to respected Nashville record executive Wesley Rose, who secured a recording contract for Dinning with MGM, after which the song was professionally recorded.

Not accustomed to records containing such morbid content, some radio stations didn’t know what to do with it, so erred on the side of caution and decided not to air it.

Even one UK trade publication, writing about the record, headlined the article “Blood Runs in the Grooves.”

[Trivia Bit] Mark Dinning’s childhood babysitter was Clara Ann Fowler, who later became the biggest female pop vocalist of the 50’s, Patti Page.
